MAX7219 Dot Matrix Module is an IC that is used to drive common cathode LED panels, 7-segment displays and level indicators communicating via SPI interface. This board has a 8×8 dot matrix LED display. Multiple modules can be cascaded using header connections.

What is 8×8 dot matrix?
The dot matrix that we’re going to use in this guide is a 8×8 matrix which means that it has 8 columns and 8 rows, so it contains a total of 64 LEDs. The MAX7219 chip makes it easier to control the dot matrix, by just using 3 digital pins of the Arduino board.
What does the MAX7219 Dot Matrix Module do?
The MAX7219 chip communicates via the SPI interface, so it only require 3 data pins to connect to a microcontroller, and what’s more we can daisy-chain several modules together for larger display using the same 3 wires.
How does a dot matrix display work?
In a LED dot matrix display the LEDs are located at the column and row intersections of the matrix. LEDs in the same row are connected together as are LEDs in the same column.
How do you control LED matrix?
To control an individual LED, you set its column LOW and its row HIGH. To control multiple LEDs in a row, you set the row HIGH, then take the column high, then set the columns LOW or HIGH as appropriate; a LOW column will turn the corresponding LED ON, and a HIGH column will turn it off.
How do I connect a dot matrix to Arduino?
To connect the Dot Matrix to Arduino, simply connect the Vcc and GND pins to 5V and GND Arduino, and the DIN, CS, and CLK pins of dot matrix can be connected to any digital pins of Arduino.
