Reed Switch
A reed switch is an electromagnetic switch used to control the flow of electricity in a circuit. The switch looks like a small glass capsule with electrical leads poking out of each end. When a magnetic field is moved in the direction of the switch, the reeds get magnetized and move together or apart.
It features incredibly high reliability for a mechanical switch, and they’re able to function for billions of cycles before failing. Additionally, because of their sealed construction, they can operate in explosive environments where a spark could potentially have disastrous results.

What is a Reed Switch?
A reed switch is an electromagnetic switch used to control the flow of electricity in a circuit. They consist of two or more ferrous reeds enclosed in a tiny glass tube-like envelope. When a magnetic field is moved in the direction of the switch, the reeds become magnetized and move together or apart.
How Does a Reed Switch Work?
Two ferromagnetic blades only a few microns apart make up the switching mechanism. The two blades pull together when a magnet approaches these blades. The blades close the normally open (NO) contacts when they come into contact, allowing electricity to flow. Additionally, some reed switches have a non-ferromagnetic contact that creates a normally closed (NC) output. The switching contact will become disconnected and pull away from an approaching magnet.
Several metals, including tungsten and rhodium, are used to make contacts. Some even employ mercury, which needs to be kept in the correct orientation to switch properly. The contacts are sealed by a glass envelope under one atmosphere of internal pressure and filled with inert gas, typically nitrogen.

How is a reed switch activated?
Although it can be activated by placing it inside an electrical coil, many reed switches and reed sensors are used for proximity sensing and are activated by a magnet. As the magnet is brought into the proximity of the reed sensor/switch, the device activates.
